No Comments As stated in Part I, I will now show you how I saw the Resurrection as not just possible but probable, so probable that I cannot in good conscience deny it. This will not be in full detail. I will have reading suggestions at the end of this article that are devoted to the problem. Preliminary Sketch Even after my reversion, I still thought of God as a distant creator of the universe. I had been a practicing Catholic for four years before I came to the conclusion that God was personal. As stated in the previous article, my issues were the problem of evil and the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Someone who is reading this is probably wondering why, during my time as a deist, I was also studying Catholic theology, acting as a youth minister, and participating in the sacraments?

Grand Rapids, MI; The book is subtitled: The book lists members scientists without regard to which particular denomination they belonged to, whether Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Quaker, Latter-day Saint, Lutheran, Eastern Orthodox, or otherwise. The back cover notes some of the reasons the author wrote the book: Secular thought often portrays religion as the enemy of science, but the truth is that many of the world’s greatest scientific discoveries were made by persons of faith, seeking to honor God and His creation.

If you’re an Atheist, could you ever marry someone who was Chrisitan and held the same views as I’ve described above? If you’re a Christian, could you ever marry an Atheist who didn’t believe in God or creation stories? I do not believe in interreligious relationships, be they romantic or friendships. It is my experience – and I have plenty in that department – that interreligious relationships do not work.
It is impossible to happily be with someone who believes I am essentially wrong, and for whom I believe that they are essentially wrong. Sure, there are many people who are in interreligious relationships; but they either don’t take their own or the other person’s religion seriously; there are economical or familial ties; or they are bound by some pyschopathology.

This is an excellent post you know. I saw this video of Penn from Penn and Teller…and he asked the same questions. You know, I do tell people. As much as I can or as much as they will listen. Jesus said that all that the Father draws will come to Him.

Two little boys of 10 are stretched out on the grass looking up at the twinkling spectacle of stars displayed before them. It was on that night that I became a Deist but had to spend 81 years alone in the wilderness before I realized what I was and what we all should be. As Paul Harvey would say, and now, the rest of the story. I I was born on, June 21, , a Monday, at 7: As they say, the Roaring Twenties. I was dearly loved by my parents, however, there were complications that may have had something to do with the direction my religious life took in later years.
My father worked for F. Religion was also involved; I was dunked in a Baptist church when I was 10, sprinkled or what ever they do by the Methodists, Congregationalists, and Presbyterians in following years, and as a result I was never quite sure what I was or believed and some years later I had a similar incident when I went into the Army during WWII, it was my first Christmas away from home can there be anything more alone than being alone on Christmas eve? For those brief moments I really felt loneliness.
We settled down and raised 3 children, two boys and a girl, and since there was no United Presbyterian church in our town we settled for the Presbyterian Church. My three children all attended college and my oldest son became very active with the Inter- Varsity Christian Fellowship and even went to work for them for a period after graduation until he went off for his PhD. By my life had changed, I had a good job but I tended to drink quite a bit and there were scenes between my wife and I about my drinking to the point where we started sleeping in separate rooms.
We settled our legal affairs and she was gone. Soon after, my company transferred me to the home office.

The Christian Broadcasting Network CBN is a global ministry committed to preparing the nations of the world for the coming of Jesus Christ through mass media.
But memories of Jesus the man have proved stubbornly elusive for historians who are convinced the truth of the son of God lies beneath the surface of Gospel accounts written decades after his death. In so doing, University of North Carolina religious studies professor Bart Ehrman may have opened a new front in the currently quiescent Jesus wars, a quarter-century of devout and secular scholars battling over what, exactly, is the gospel truth.
His eye-opening Jesus Before the Gospels: The reason Biblical historians cannot find even the outline of a historical Jesus, argues an increasingly persuasive chorus of challengers, is that there is nothing to find: Jesus Christ never lived at all. The faithful have always coped with it by assuming that however long it lasted—and they do tend to shorten it—the inerrant Word of God was still passed on in oral form subject to correction by Apostles or other eyewitnesses.
Secular historians, without much questioning their own assumptions, accepted the entrenched academic idea that oral cultures were significantly better than literary cultures in preserving accurate memory. The passage of years explained, in a way acceptable to historians, why there were different accounts of the same event.
The answer, that there must have been two visits to the unlucky child, was essentially impossible for anyone not committed to gospel truth.
In it, the anonymous author describes the severe ostracism she and her husband faced from their families and communities because of their marriage. The piece was written at a time when there were relatively few intermarriages in the United States, and it was still common for Jewish parents to sever all ties with and literally sit shiva for a child who married a non-Jew.
Since the second half of the 20th century—mainly as a result of greater secularization, assimilation and increased social mobility—American Jewish society has undergone a series of radical transformations.

Blackwell babbles like an idiot for most of it. But what jumped out at me was something Hitchens said that just grinds on me because it is so blatantly false and it is being presented by someone who so often speaks for causes I believe in. The most obvious is in a letter that he wrote to Ezra Stiles a mere six weeks before he died in which he laid out his creed: Here is my Creed: I believe in one God, Creator of the Universe.
That He governs it by his Providence.

There are not too many people like that around. It sounds like you have a well rounded life. At the end of the day a Christian is meant to follow in the foot steps of Christ no one is perfect. If you read scripture, Christ wasn’t anything like how most Churches represent him. If fact I think if he was around today he would be disgusted with how Churches operate and with the people who attend them.

He was taught Presbyterian doctrine when he was a child. Resurrection and Reversion: How a Deist Became a Theist, Part II
Posted on January 24, by duckypunch My name is Ducky. The reality, however, was that I had wandered very far from the religion of my upbringing in so many ways — theologically, philosophically, and ethically. I had even, for a brief time while I was still in undergraduate studies, left the church of Christ and explored other branches of Christianity. For about a year, I attended a local Anglican congregation.
In university courses on philosophy and history, they refer to the Age of Reason, the Age of Enlightenment and the philosophy of Deism. The Age of Reason covers the ’s and ’s A.D. and the Age of Enlightenment relates to the ’s and possibly early ’s.
Yet there is a secret, but it is so inviolable that it has never been confided or whispered to anyone. Those who stop at the outward crust of things imagine that the secret consists in words, in signs, or that the main point of it is to be found only in reaching the highest degree. This is a mistaken view: He would not trust that secret to his best friend in Freemasonry, because he is aware that if his friend has not found it out, he could not make any use of it after it had been whispered in his ear.
No, he keeps his peace, and the secret remains a secret. A brother recently claimed, to support his activities in the now 5 day old “Grand Orient of the United States of America” in that modern “Freemasonry has lost track of its origins”. Expanding on that, he went on to claim that Masonic Lodges should have a blank book representing the volume of Sacred Law because the “majority of early Freemasons were Deists”.
Its not possible at this time to determine the number of men who were Freemasons worldwide in the late ‘s. However, it does not seem unreasonable, given the number of Lodges in the world to put that number in the hundreds of thousands. Even if the numbers were only , , four exemplars is hardly representative of Moreover, research indicates that while Benjamin Franklin did, in fact, have deist leanings, he was a infrequently practicing Episcopalian 1 , Paul Revere was a Congregationalist 2 , John Hancock was Congregationalist 3 , and on his deathbed, Voltaire declared himself a Catholic 4.
Research shows the claim to be without foundation, though intellectual honesty requires the notation that SOME masons, were, in fact, deists. As a means of getting a larger sampling, I used the known 9 masons who signed the Declaration of Independence, the six men who Signed the Articles of Confederation, and the 13 men who signed the U.
