Always follow manufacturers instructions for both the thermostat and the HVAC system. I have been told by some manufacturers of gas heaters that it is not humid enough here in California compared to the East coast to make heat pumps efficient – but considering the source I am not sure that is true. Heat pumps are considered more economical than gas heaters, but they still need to be partnered with a gas heater if you have an attached spa that you want to heat to or more degrees F. That is probably one of the main reasons there are not more of them out there, plus the fact they are usually more expensive than a gas heater. Another consideration is electrical hook up costs – if you do not have an electrical subpanel near the pool equipment, you will have to run new electrical for the heat pump – voltage, and beefy 6 or 8 gauge wires.

Your “R” terminal is basically your “hot” and your “C” terminal is basically your “neutral” to simplify explanation. The Furnace supplies the “R” power to the thermostat and then depending on what wire the thermostat sends the power back on determines what the system does. The thermostat terminals are as follows “G” is fan, “W” or “aux” is elect heat, “Y” tells the outdoor unit to run, “O” or “B” tells the outdoor unit whether it is heating or cooling, and “E” is emergency heat.
Now, here is the key. As I mentioned previously “O” or “B”, a system will only use one or the other. The entire industry except for Rheem and Ruud uses the “O” terminial which has 24v on it when you are cooling and no power when you are heating. Rheem and Ruud use the “B” terminal which is just backwards, 24v in heating and no power in cooling. Most universal t-stats come set from the factory to use the “O” terminal which is more common.
Usually this can be changed in the installer setup menu on the stat or sometimes the stat will have separate “O” and “B” terminals.
One more step
It’s a good idea to install a pony box by the equipment that will contain a GFI for the pump and space to add additional electrical for future needs. Most municipalities require a method to shut off the pump within arms reach of the pump or at least line of sight, so using a Sceptre weather tight switch outside of the panel, by the pump would be smart and saves having to constantly flip open the pony panel to get at the breaker for switching off the pump.
When you hook everything up, remember your grounding and make sure that you have the motor jumpered to operate at the voltage you are sending out there.

An open circuit, obviously, is a broken or disconnected wire. Shorted circuits occur when the insulation between two wires fails. Before wasting hours of expensive diagnostic time, test all fuse circuits with a DVOM or approved test light. Remember that fuses can fail without showing signs of an obvious burn-through.
Since a loose or corroded fuse connector may also cause many intermittent circuit failures, thoroughly inspect and clean the fuse circuits before proceeding with your diagnosis. Most wiring failures occur at either end of the wire as a bad connection. Although splice failures inside the wiring harness are rare, some nameplates are notorious for splice failures.
Technical service bulletins TSBs and Internet sources offer valuable insight to typical nameplate problems. Corroded harness connections cause most intermittent circuit failures.
