My husband hates refilling our Keurig. He comments about it often. You see, I have a habit of grabbing my cup, filling it with water, pouring it into the water reservoir and then putting in my k-cup and brewing my coffee. When I go for my 2nd morning cup I again just pour a cup of water before I brew one. It’s never an issue to me. He, on the other hand, when he is ‘off’ or home that morning and drinking more than 1 cup-to-go out the door on the way to work will walk to the Keurig and brew the coffee and walk away. Doesn’t refill it until it’s down low and either has to remove the reservoir and take it to the sink to fill it, or make trips with his little mug s of water from the sink to the counter with the machine. In my mind, no wonder he thinks it’s a big deal.

We are at the tail end of the remodel, finally, and needed to install a water line from the sink plumbing to the refrigerator for the ice maker. This is such an easy process and so I created a tutorial on how to install a refrigerator water line. The instructions apply to replacing an existing water line, as well. An Adjustable Wrench or Pliers Utility Knife First and foremost, if an existing water line is being replaced, turn off the water to the line. It will be located under the sink!
More information may be included on the instructions that are included in the icemaker kit, so make sure to thoroughly read those first! Carefully move the refrigerator out from the wall, and remove any kickplates installed on the lower part of the cabinet on the floor. We built the cabinets in the Rebel house using furniture legs to elevate them off of the floor, and the kickplates had not been installed yet.
If the line is just being replaced, unscrew the brass nut on the valve for the old icemaker line under the sink, and remove the line. I removed the existing line from the refrigerator by unscrewing the brass nut holding the water line in the valve. The line is generally located at the lower right edge of the back of the refrigerator.
It would be easy to add a coupler to tap into the existing line but doing so adds an extra place for a leak to occur. Plus, that part of the line would be located under a cabinet and it may leak for awhile before being detected thus ruining the floor or cabinets.

They’re rather cheap – 20 to 30 dollars. For a distance such as yours, it’s best to run the flex line from behind the fridge, down through a small drilled hole in the floor next to the wall, and under the floor. And along the basement ceiling, securing it to the floor joists in the basement ceiling, or drilling holes in the joists – as with running electrical wire.
If the joists are laid in the same direction the hose needs to go, then it is simply secured in place with plastic loops against the side of one joist. When the hose reaches the area in the basement, just under the sink, a cold water pipe probably half inch will be easily accessible. The kit comes with a self tapping valve that will allow the hose to hook up without any tools. It simply clamps on to the cold water pipe and presses a hole in it for the fridge water.
They’re okay, but I never trusted ’em to remain truly leak proof. So I always just make a trip to the hardware store and get the fittings necessary to install a regular valve for this.
