Previous Piece of Meat excursions have been set among violent rural drug users; for Shut In, written by company members Eric Layer and Christopher Tharp, the troupe shifts their focus closer to home, setting the action among a group of young slackers living in a rundown house in a high-rent neighborhood, which could very likely be Capitol Hill. They jump at the offer of a bed in the corner of the living room of a house occupied by four men, each of whom is reaching the end of his own personal tether. Smith , a former drag queen now consigned to an upstairs bedroom by his own obesity, and seen only in silhouette. Though they focus almost exclusively on their characters’ extreme flaws, the playwrights and actors combine to conceive the most realistic group of something losers I’ve ever seen. Most ’90s young adult narratives, from Reality Bites to My So-Called Life, give far too much credit to their characters’ supposed sincerity and dreams, using them to balance out their shallowness and blinkered worldviews. Shut-In offers up the same traits, but at a deep discount. In this play, present actions count far more than unrealistic ambitions, and rightfully so.

Because When you are facing in the wrong direction, progress means walking backwards. History suggests that our world view undergoes disruptive change not so much when science adds new concepts to our cognitive toolkit, but when it takes away old ones. The sets of intuitions that have been with us since birth define our scientific prejudices, and not only are poorly-suited to the realms of the very large and very small, but also fail to describe everyday phenomena.
If we are to identify where the next transformation of our world view will come from, we need to take a fresh look at our deep intuitions. In the two minutes that it takes you to read this essay, I am going to try and rewire your basic thinking about causality. Causality is usually understood as meaning that there is a single, preceding cause for an event.

All we have been left with is the mouldy old Mousetrap, not so much a play as a piece of theatrical archaeology, and the long running and genuinely scary The Woman in Black. So it is good to welcome the arrival of Strangers on a Train, which at its considerable best really does thrill and chill. There is regular use of projections and black and white film to suggest the train where the two central characters first meet as well as a host of other locations, and all the sets and costumes are monochrome.
Indeed there are only two highly effective bursts of colour in the whole show. The scene changes are accomplished with superb speed on a revolve, and there is a nerve-jangling score. No composer is credited but it sounds remarkably like the work of Hitchcock collaborator Bernard Herrmann.
Because his father, Alexander Stirling Calder, received public commissions, the family traversed the country throughout Calder’s childhood. Calder was encouraged to create, and from the age of eight he always had his own workshop wherever the family lived. For Christmas in , Calder presented his parents with two of his first sculptures, a tiny dog and duck cut from a brass sheet and bent into formation.
The duck is kinetic—it rocks back and forth when tapped.

Early steps[ edit ] For more details on this topic, see Kinetoscope. Dickson as a test of the early version of the Edison Kinetophone , combining the Kinetoscope and phonograph. The idea of combining motion pictures with recorded sound is nearly as old as the concept of cinema itself. On February 27, , a couple of days after photographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge gave a lecture not far from the laboratory of Thomas Edison , the two inventors privately met.
Muybridge later claimed that on this occasion, six years before the first commercial motion picture exhibition, he proposed a scheme for sound cinema that would combine his image-casting zoopraxiscope with Edison’s recorded-sound technology. The two devices were brought together as the Kinetophone in , but individual, cabinet viewing of motion pictures was soon to be outmoded by successes in film projection.
These appear to be the first publicly exhibited films with projection of both image and recorded sound. The primary issue was synchronization: While motion picture projectors soon allowed film to be shown to large theater audiences, audio technology before the development of electric amplification could not project satisfactorily to fill large spaces.
The Best CMS
Paul Berry After building the product for Huffington Post, and owning the product and engineering groups at AOL after we were acquired, it was clear to me there was a huge gap between what the current CMS offering gave the world and what the world needed. Five years later we are at scale, moving the needle and doing to WordPress what Airbnb did to Craigslist. Social and Centralized WordPress, Drupal, and the custom CMS solutions of the world are all independent, non-connected instances that each need to be updated individually.
There are over 87 million instances of WordPress alone in the world, and each security upgrade, feature update, and every other single thing has to be updated for each site individually.
But I recently sensed a major shift in Tinseltown, and started making some phone calls to see if I was right. And why the anonymity? Welcome to the new war on the right — Hollywood style. Andrew Breitbart warned of how much we were hated in this town, and set up Big Hollywood to even the playing field.
The deplorable bunch in Hollywood is bigger in number than many think, but bullying tactics and blacklist fears have kept most in the closet. Thankfully, many of us could give two fucks what they think. As big as this sprawling city is, Hollywood is a surprisingly small community. I entered this gilded group as a man in transition.

Historic notes[ edit ] Interior of first theatre, Seven old theaters were active in Venice at the end of the eighteenth century, two for the production of plays and the others for music. The grandest of these was the Teatro San Benedetto, which stood on the site currently occupied by the Rossini cinema. However, following a judicial ruling in , this association was expelled and forced to give up the opera house to the noble Venier family, the owners of the land on which it was built.

Battle and siege[ edit ] Sketch of the battle, August 5, The army landing force under Granger was ready to launch the attack on August 3, but Farragut wanted to wait for his fourth monitor USS Tecumseh, expected at any moment but delayed at Pensacola. The admiral almost decided to proceed with only three monitors, and the army went ashore on Dauphin Island, acting under a misapprehension of naval intentions. The fleet was not ready to move yet, so the defenders were able to rush additional forces to Fort Gaines.
After the battle, Farragut concluded that the delay had actually worked to the advantage of the Federal forces, as the reinforcements were not great enough to have any effect on the battle, but they were included in the surrender. The 14 wooden-hulled vessels would be lashed together in pairs, in a reprise of a tactic that the admiral had used earlier at the Battle of Port Hudson at Port Hudson, Louisiana.
The monitors would form a column and lead the way into the bay, moving in close to Fort Morgan on the right side of the channel as they went in.
